The cold snap in Australia has had severe repercussions and one of them being expensive vegetables. The price of some of the vegetables has doubled over the last few days. This could be due to a series of freak storms, bringing unusually cold weather in southern and eastern parts of the country.
Crops have been damaged due to rain and cold weather in Queensland. Supply of vegetables has reduced in the market and the worst affected ones being green beans, zucchini and capsicum. According to media reports, the crops have completely stopped growing.
The prices of tomatoes, zucchinis and capsicums will continue to rise in Sydney. According to Sydney Market Reporting Service, most of their vegetables are sourced from Queensland where heavy rainfall has hampered production. Cold weather has affected the quality of the crops as well.
On the other hand, a fruit and vegetable delivery service named Sydney Fresh believes that Iceberg, snowpeas, cucumbers and even berries have declined in supply owing to the cold weather. And, lettuce has been hit real hard.
The bad weather has affected retail giant Woolworths as well. Their stores are experiencing a shortage of lettuce, broccoli and cauliflower due to bad weather conditions in New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
Central Queensland is the most popular farming area in Australia during this time. This region has witnessed below normal temperatures in July this year and has already received 15 times the average rainfall for July.
