Climate change: Two glaciers of Ecuador under threat

Ecuador could lose two of its seven glaciers throughout the following couple of years on account of global warming, a phenomenon that would change the paramo biological system and its impact on the country's water supply and humidity.

The most imminent risk concerns the icy masses of Carihuairazo, in Chimborazo area, and the southern Iliniza, between those of Pichincha and Cotopaxi.

According to Estefania Avalos, undersecretary of Climate Change at the Environment Ministry of Ecuador, Worldwide assessments measured a temperature increase of 1.5˚C, an example that won't change in the following 12 years.

This expansion has officially left evident signs that temperatures are changing, yet as per another expert, Bolivar Caceres of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, the danger is inevitable.

Ecuador has seven glaciers: Antisana, Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, Cayambe, the Ilinizas (north and south), El Altar and Carihuairazo, all situated on volcanic craters influenced by the greenhouse effect.

On account of Carihuairazo, 96% of the glaciers surface has dissolved, which implies it could vanish in only five years, Caceres stated, and keeping in mind that no careful device has been made for the southern Iliniza, the melt there has additionally been vigorous.

The expert who warned that it is hard to predict the glacier’s future because climatic conditions change at random also said that up as far as possible of 2018, a normal across the nation loss of 53% of glacier coverage was recorded.

In the Andes, glaciers never vanish completely but they do shrink vividly. However, some models indicate that glaciers could disappear by late 2100.
