Development of blue lakes on the top of East Antarctica ice sheets is a matter of concern for the scientists across globe.
Usually, these Supra glacial lakes form during the summer months when temperatures tend to rise above freezing. However, these dazzling ponds are posing serious threats to these glaciers. Furthermore, this lake formation may be linked to rising global temperatures.
However, these lake formations are not the first time ever happening on earth. In fact, such kinds of meltwater ponds are a usual occurrence in the Greenland ice sheet.
If the weathermen are to be trusted, Antarctica is considered to be one of the far more stable and less dynamic regions as compared to Greenland. Thus, there has not been much research on the particular region.
According to a recent study, these large glaciers have started to evocate the Greenland ice sheet. The forecasters used satellite images and records taken in the summers between year 2000 and 2013. This gave them a clear picture that over 8,000 supra glacial lakes have been formed over the glacier in East Antarctica.
The main concern for the scientists across globe regarding these supra glacial lakes is that due to the melting of these ice sheets, water surge will move into the seas and oceans thereby increasing the sea level by a few feet. This would lead to bothering people residing in low lying areas. Moreover, then they would have to be evacuated from their place of living.
