Heavy to extremely heavy rains that lashed parts of Northeast India, particularly Assam and Meghalaya have caused devastation in terms of floods in the neighboring country Bangladesh as well.

Due to the incessant Monsoon rains in Bangladesh, Brahmaputra and Padma Rivers along with their tributaries are swelling up and are flowing above the danger mark. Moreover, continuous moderate to heavy rains in the northern districts of Bangladesh has also worsened the situation in the country thereby leading to floods in northern parts of the country.

The flood water from Assam and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal is flowing down towards northern parts of Bangladesh. Additionally, heavy rains continuing over the northern parts of Bangladesh and Assam, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal have resulted in inundation in parts of central districts of the country adjacent to the northern parts as well.

Approx. 120 people have been reportedly killed so far in Bangladesh due to Monsoon floods. Whereas, above 5 million people in more than 28 northern and central districts of the country are worst affected by floods.

The floods caused by water rush from upstream and torrential rains have destroyed the farmland as well. As per the                 Department of Disaster Management, crops of over 6,18,000 ha and over 15000 houses are completely destroyed by floods.

As per Skymet, now, the axis of Monsoon trough which is running across the northeastern states of India has shifted towards the south and thus rains have decreased significantly over Bangladesh as well as Northeast India. As of now, we do not expect heavy rains to reoccur over Bangladesh thereby bringing a sigh of relief for the people of the country.

However, scattered light rain will continue over the country for the next 2 days. Thereafter, rains will further reduce over the country and only light spells will continue.
