The cyclonic storm Mora finally formed in the east central Bay of Bengal and is now moving north northeastwards. The system is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely over Northeast India.
The system is expected to hit and cross Bangladesh coast between longitude 91E and 92E near Chittagong around May 30, 2017 forenoon.
With this, heavy to very heavy rains are likely over Bangladesh. In fact, South Bangladesh is low lying as the elevation above mean sea level is very low which makes them susceptible for flooding. We expect Mora to make a landfall near Chittagong city.
Sea surface is warm and favourable for further intensification. By tomorrow forenoon, intensity of rains may reduce marginally and Mora may make a landfall as a cyclonic storm. Winds can be between 100 and 120 kmph at the time of landfall.
Due to storm surge, the low-lying areas may get inundated. Flooding and waterlogging is expected in many areas as well.
Normally, cyclones that form in Bay tend to recurve in northeast direction towards Bangladesh and Myanmar and very few reach the Indian coast of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha or West Bengal.
