Antarctic blast hits southeast Australia

A classic Antarctic blast has hit the southeastern states of Australia. Strong damaging winds, heavy rainfall and snow have been lashing many states over the region.

One elderly person was killed by a falling tree near Adelaide on Monday. The cold snap also injured two other people in separate car crashes during a night of snow, hail, and strong gusts in Victoria.

Hundreds of trees came down crashing onto houses, buildings, power lines and roads. Thousands of houses are still without power.

The Bureau of Meteorology in Australia has issued severe weather warnings for the states of Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and South Australia. Here several areas will be experiencing record-breaking strong winds.

The cold snap reached Canberra on Wednesday morning, where people woke up to snow fall. In fact, residents in the suburbs of Dunlop and Gungahlin also reported snow on the ground. According to media reports, this cold snap has come down right from Antarctica.

After affecting South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria over the last 2 days, the Antarctic blast has now reached New South Wales. Here the worst affected regions will include Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Riverina, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and parts of the Hunter.
