After being hit by typhoon Meranti a few days back, Taiwan is all set to get smashed by another typhoon Malakas possibly on Saturday.
This tropical storm is expected to lash Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan at around mid-day. This is likely to be a category 4 hurricane. Moreover, winds gusts at a speed of 125 miles per hour are also forecasted to reach the capital city.
Malakas is expected to make its appearance to the north, passing between Taiwan and Japan’s southernmost Ryukyu Islands.
Malakas is equivalent to a category 3 hurricane in the Atlantic or eastern Pacific Ocean as it makes its closest approach to these islands. As per the weatherman, Malakas may also intensify into a Category 4 hurricane as well.
Moreover, the typhoon is expected to bring in heavy rains, strong winds and strong surfs making the weather conditions uncomfortable. Wind gusting at a speed of 160 km/hour is expected to make a track close to the coast. The worst impacts being on the northeastern tip of Taiwan.
The capital city of Taiwan may witness strong winds gusts ranging between 65-95 km/hr.
Flooding and mudslides are also likely to follow Taiwan. 150 mm of rainfall is also anticipated over the region. However, conditions are expected to improve later this weekend. It is likely to hit hard into Japan’s Kyushu Island early next week.
The risk of damaging winds and flooding hurricane gush will be higher across western Japan than eastern Honshu. The danger of flooding rain remains more along Malakas' entire journey across Japan including Osaka and Tokyo.
There can be more localized rain totals and flooding issues when the downpours reach northern and western Honshu and northern Kyushu in Japan during the second half of the weekend.
