An Earthquake of 7.8 magnitude has struck near Christchurch, New Zealand around 12 a.m. local time on Monday. According to USGS, the earthquake happened around 10 kms below the South Island.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a warning that a tsunami has been generated after the quakes have struck. The height of the waves was measured at 8.2 feet above normal tide level by a gauge near Kaikoura, New Zealand.
The initial tremor was strong in nature which was followed by several aftershocks in north and also inland. Several of these aftershocks were closing to the magnitude 6. The two aftershocks in Kaikoura were recorded at 6.2 magnitude and 5.8 magnitude, while a third shock was felt near Blenheim at 5.7.
No reports of injuries, fatalities or damage have been confirmed.
