7.2 magnitude earthquake throttles Mexico

A dynamic earthquake has shaken South and Central parts of Mexico. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2. It occurred at 5:39 pm as per Mexico’s local time.

As per the US Geological Survey, the epicenter was 33 miles (53 kilometers) northeast of Pinotepa in southern Oaxaca state. The depth of the quake was about 24 kilometers. The earthquake was so strong that the tremors were felt as far away as Guatemala.

The deadly earthquake made the buildings sway to and fro. The people were in state of shock and went running into the street. It reminded the people of the earthquake which had devasted buildings, roads killing hundreads of people

As per media reports, material damage has been reported as many buildings collapsed near Pinotepa and Santiago Jamiltepec.

In fact, Mexico City Red Cross tweeted that the facade of a building collapsed in Mexico City's Condesa neighborhood, which was hit hard in the September earthquake.

Emergency warning systems were activated in Mexico City, some 348 kilometers (216 miles) from the centre of the quake, and many buildings were evacuated.

The Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto stated that National Civil Protection system protocols had been initiated. As per the reports of US National Weather Service, the Oaxaca state civil protection agency mentioned tweeted that they monitoring the coastline and there was no tsunami threat.

The Mexico City Government also tweeted that to the residents to check for any damage, close gas stoves, and disconnect electrical gadgets when returning home.
