6.9 quake hit Japan; Minor Tsunami alert lifted

Earthquake scare in JapanAfter a moderate earthquake recorded off north east Japan measured at a magnitude of 6.9, the meteorological agency of Japan issued a tsunami warning.

As per the alert, residents were warned to expect 1 m high tsunami to hit the coast of Iwate Prefecture at approximately 8.00 am (2300 GMT). According to reports available, evacuation was ordered from the coastal towns of Iwate.  Nearly 20,000 people were advised to evacuate but the tsunami warning was lifted after about two hours.

The earthquake was measured at a depth of about 6 miles and several smaller aftershocks were also reported in the area.The pacific tsunami centre at Hawaii said, there was no danger for a tsunami in the pacific region. Tohoku, which runs the nuclear plants in nearby prefectures of Miyagi and Aomori, reported that no irregularities were observed at these plants after the earthquake. It may be noted that all 48 of Japan nuclear reactors remained offline after the disaster of March 2011 earthquake causing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant melt down.

Japan accounts for nearly 20% of the entire Earth’s quakes which have magnitude of 6 or greater and is considered to be one of the most earthquake prone area in the world.
