Mumbai city’s Juhu beach witnessed a rare natural occurrence which saw neon blue waves crashing against the city coastline. Two Zoology students rushed to the spot and took specimen, along with some stunning photographs.

The event, known as bioluminescence, occurs when organisms emit light as a reaction to stress caused by water. The result is a show of tiny neon blue lights which are washed ashore every now and then.

In this case, the organism triggering the event were phytoplankton. The organisms, close to 0.5 mm in size, activate a protein called luciferase when battered by tidal waves. This gives birth to a series of chemical reactions which emit glowing blue colored lights.
