The air pollution mess in Delhi is now gradually shifting to Agra. Cars which are more than 10 years old have found a new home with the residents of Agra. These are cars which have been banned in Delhi by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). But if these cars are really unfit for Delhi, how can they be fit for Agra?
Delhi’s air pollution crisis has been the talk of the town since years now. The world’s most polluted city is doing all it can to tackle air pollution. From moving towards mechanical cleaning of roads to making public transport better, a number of eco-friendly steps have been taken by the Delhi government.
Even the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has stepped in to clean the mess in Delhi. The NGT, quite recently, banned vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi as well. The order did receive some resistance, but the Supreme Court upheld NGT’s directive. However, these cars are leaving Delhi, but they aren’t going too far. Buyers in Agra are more than interested in purchasing this ‘polluting’ junk.
Agra is facing pollution woes of its own. The city’s iconic monument, the Taj Mahal, is among several monuments across India getting defiled due to pollution. The air quality in Agra is deteriorating and the NGT has already issued a notice to Agra over the rise in air pollution levels. The city may soon be flooded with vehicles which have been deemed unfit for a polluted city like Delhi.
But buyers in Agra are least concerned and are, in fact, excited about buying their favourite cars, for an unreal price. As per local used-car dealers in Agra, consumers are constantly shooting queries regarding diesel variants of decade-old cars. These include SUVs, hatchbacks, and even sedans which are available for anywhere between Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1.5 lakh. Authorities must step in otherwise seemingly cheaper options will steer Agra towards alarming pollution levels in near future.
