Meteorite or Space Junk: What killed the Tamil Nadu bus driver?

February 9, 2016 11:09 AM |

Meteorite or Space Junk: What killed the Tamil Nadu bus driver? It was a usual Saturday morning in Nattrampalli, Vellore. However, the afternoon turned out to be quite an unusual one after a bus driver was killed by an object that fell straight from the sky.

The incident took place on Saturday during mid-day and caused a massive explosion leaving a 2 feet deep impact crater.

The object fell on the premises of the Bharathidasan Engineering College, which not only killed the bus driver but it also left three more people injured.

Kamraj, the 40-year-old deceased worked as a bus driver in the college. The other three injured include a college student and two gardeners. Scientists are yet to confirm if the mysterious object was a meteorite or some other kind of space debris.

If the object is a meteorite; a fragment of an asteroid or a comet, it will be the first recorded fatality from a meteorite impact. The effect of the fallen object caused some shattered bus windows as well. As per NASA, no humans have been reported to be killed by a meteorite in at least a 1,000 years.

A meteorite strike is a very rare event. Usually, small meteors that end up falling on Earth get burnt in the Earth’s atmosphere itself. Even if the meteor is big enough and survives long enough to fall on the Earth’s surface, it usually falls into the ocean as most of the Earth is covered with water.
