Chickpea or chana were sown on 7.15 million hectares across the states of India, down 16.6% compared with 8.58 million hectares sown a year ago, according to the latest data from the agriculture ministry. Acreage in Madhya Pradesh, the largest chana-growing state, was at 2.64 million hectares, down from 3.24 million hectares a year ago.
