On November 30, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in the inaugural session of the UN climate change in Paris. Some 80 Heads of States will come together and discuss means to settle on a global climate pact.
Despite a hectic overseas itinerary for November, PM Modi is likely to find time for this meet of global importance. As per sources, he is expected to leave for Paris, following his trip to Singapore (November 23-24).
The Paris climate talks have been labelled as the most important Head of States meet on climate change and global warming. World leaders will try to find a solution to keep temperature rise under control. A mutual consensus will have to be reached for the meeting to be successful. Both developed and developing nations will have to be on the same page for this to be possible.
India has already submitted its climate action plans of reducing carbon emissions by as much as 35 per cent from the 2005 level. PM Modi has talked about climate justice in particular, while Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has stressed that India wants the Paris talks to be successful but not at the cost of an equitable and just climate agreement.
If the Paris talks do succeed, the world will agree to a legally binding universal agreement meant to keep global warming below 2 degree Celsius. A total of 50,000 participants will gather at the climate talks. Some 25,000 official delegates from governments, organizations, NGOs, UN agencies, and other civil society groups will converge at the event.
