ISRO to rescue Karnataka from water woes

April 25, 2016 3:26 PM |

Water issues Amidst two consecutive droughts, hottest year on record and Bangalore losing its ‘pleasant city’ title, the Karnataka government has made a desperate approach to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to find water resources for the state.

The Karnataka government had approached ISRO in February and it has already embarked on the project using space technology. They will be using data received from the Bhuvan satellite to identify villages in the state with probability of water resources that could be tapped in the near future.

ISRO will generate an organized database of villages using space technology. This will aid in taking appropriate steps to conserve and also enhance water resources in these villages. Earlier this year, the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister HK Patil met scientist and honorary professor at ISRO Sivathanu Pillai, regarding this issue. According to media reports, ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar has also promised to share the ways to decipher their data with the government very soon.
