Environmentalists across the globe are overjoyed with the rising popularity of ‘green roofs’ or ‘living roofs’. A green roof is a roof of a building which is either partially or fully covered with vegetation planted over a waterproofing membrane.
As per experts, a green roof has several advantages and is easy to set up. A green roof has a cooling effect on the upper floors of a building, which then trickles down to the lower floors. Also, green roofs help reduce the carbon load for companies and businesses by bringing down air-conditioning costs and storing/utilizing rainwater.
In India, green roofs have received a good response in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. Most of these urban settlements are dotted with roofs of skyscrapers. Living roofs on top of these structures will help the cause of climate change and will give back individual benefits as well. Green roofs also helps tackle certain issues related to surface water management and help control flooding too.
Above everything else, the idea of growing your own food on top of your house roof is simply amazing. The type of vegetation will surely differ from region to region, but even then, one can go organic by growing his or her own food.
