India has successfully submitted its first ‘Biennial Update Report’ to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The report states that the Energy Sector contributes more than 70 percent greenhouse gas emissions (GHG's).

The Energy sector includes fuel combustion in industries, electricity production, as well as transport and fugitive emissions.

In the year 2010, India emitted 2,136.84 million tonnes of carbon equivalent greenhouse gases. The report also highlights carbon emission cuts made by India between the years 2005 and 2010.

India had promised to reduce its emissions per unit by around 20 – 25 percent by the year 2020. According to the Biennial Update Report, the country has achieved 12 percent reduction in emissions by the year 2010.

The report BUR has a range of climate-friendly measure initiations including eight National Missions under the NAPCC (National Action Plan on Climate Change). Other measures include the Renewable Purchase Obligations, Integrated Power Development Scheme, National Program for LED-based lighting, and Enhancement of cess on coal.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has prepared the Biennial Update Report (BUR) under its NATCOM project, which is funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNDP.

The report has also been supported by studies conducted by 17 Non-governmental research organizations and national-level institutions. Inputs have been taken from independent experts, several ministries and government department.
