Chennai Monsoon Woes

October 19, 2012 7:48 PM |

Delhi, Who doesn’t love it when it pours! But you still might not see beaming smiles on the faces of Chennai people. An arrival of the northeast monsoon followed by heavy spells in the city was not welcomed as warmly as it should have for a heavy continuous downpour brings with it a number of woes and worries. Though the people of Chennai did not seem too surprised by the sudden showers, just as they weren’t surprised to see that the Chennai Corporation had finished less than half of the drain clearing work before it rained cats and dogs. This is one thing they are used to. Waterlogged roads, swamped subways, crawling traffic and long unannounced hours of power cuts. This was not just the case with heavy spells; short spells also lead to blockage at many areas. Seeing this some even went on a road roko, complaining about the authority’s negligence over civic amenities. But following the pattern every monsoon, this time too they were reassured that the problems would be temporary.

Since rainfall activities will continue to lash Chennai over the next couple of days or weeks, it will become necessary for the public to check weather forecasts before heading out anywhere. Working people, college goers and school authorities are not taking any chances and are already planning for the troubles ahead.
