As predicted by Skymet Weather, the eastern coast and the southern parts of the country witnessed moderate to heavy rains, with some extremely heavy showers. In fact, rest parts of the country too witnessed light rain with few moderate spells.

In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Tuesday, Batticaloa recorded three digit rainfall to the tune of 129.9 mm, Trincomalee 44.4 mm, Galle 38.2 mm, Vavuniya 17.5 mm. In the same time frame, Ratmalana, Anuradhapura, Kandy and Maha Illuppallama witnessed light showers.

As per weathermen, the intensity of rain would now start reducing over the country. However, light to moderate with one or two odd heavy spells will continue to splash the East Coast and the southern tip of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the remaining parts of the country would record light showers only.

The capital city of Colombo too stands a chance of some isolated light rains.

These rains will occur mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. The humid winds from east and northeast would continue to increase moisture over the region. Therefore, the temperatures may increase in the afternoon, leading to cloud build up and at last rainfall.

In fact, a cyclonic circulation is prevailing south of Sri Lanka and a trough is extending from this system to Southwest Bay of Bengal. Both these weather phenomena are contributing to the heavy rains.

Rainfall activity is likely to continue for the next two to three days. Meanwhile, the rain will not impact the temperature profile much. The weather will continue to be warm and humid over Sri Lanka.
