Rains to reduce over Sri Lanka after 24 hours

Sri Lanka rains have remained heavy for quite some time now. For about almost a week now, the Sri Lankan nation has been witnessing good showers. While there are some areas that are settling with light to moderate showers, there are others which have been witnessing heavy showers. The coastal regions in particular have been recording a few hefty spells as well.

The last 24 hours were also quite rainy for many parts of Sri Lanka. In fact, heavy rainfall activity was also observed in some parts. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Nuwara Eliya recorded a whopping 64 mm of rainfall, Jaffna saw 42.9 mm of rains, Trincomalee 31.9 mm, Hambantota 31.4 mm, Pottuvil 24 mm, Galle 21.4 mm, Batticaloa 14.8 mm, Anuradhapura 11.9 mm, Vavuniya 10.3 mm, and Colombo 7.2 mm.

These rainfall activities have been attributed to the presence of a weather system in the form of a low pressure area in proximity of Sri Lanka. The weather system has now intensified into a well marked low and is now lying over South Sri Lanka and adjoining areas. A trough of low is also extending from this system.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet Weather, light to moderate rains will continue over Sri Lanka for another 24 hours. Some parts of the country, particularly, southern areas may witness heavy rains as well. However, after 24 hours, these rains will witness some reduction and heavy showers will take a backseat.
