Sri Lanka Rains

Sri Lanka, like the districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in India, recorded torrential rains during the cyclonic storm Ockhi that traveled from the Bay to the Arabian Sea defying some of the weather norms.

However, after Ockhi fizzled out, rains too stop occurring over this Island country. However, after a gap of almost 3-4 days, some parts of Sri Lanka finally managed to get some rains. Though these spells were more confined to the southern regions of the country in contrast with the northern parts of Sri Lanka.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am as on Tuesday, Kurunegala recorded good rains of 75.9 mm, Mahailluppallama 9.6 mm, Anuradhapura 8.1 mm, and Bandarawela witnessed 5.4 mm of rains. While Jaffna, Colombo, and Galle also witnessed some light spells. On the other hand, districts such as Mannar, Trincomalee, and Vavuniya remained dry.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these spells can be associated with the cyclonic circulation that is presently over the Comorin Area.

Moreover, with the effect of this weather system, light to moderate rains are expected to continue at many places over the southern districts as well as western parts of Sri Lanka for another 24-48 hours. On the contrary, the weather of North Sri Lanka, districts such as Jaffna, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, and Mannar will continue to remain mainly dry with very bleak chances of light spells.

The daytime highs are expected to remain in the lower 30’s and minimums will be in mid-40’s. Thus, the day will be warm and humid however nights will be comfortable. Though the states of southern peninsular India are not expected to get rains, Sri Lanka is likely to keep witnessing rains throughout the week.
