Heavy rains over Sri Lanka, flood like situation likely

The Sri Lankan nation has been witnessing good rainfall activity for a long time now. So much so that there have been a few good spells of rainfall as well over many areas in the nation of Sri Lanka, specially over the coastal areas.

The last 24 hours were quite similar as many areas of Sri Lanka witnessed light to moderate spells of rain. Isolated areas also recorded heavy rainfall as well.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Batticaloa recorded a whopping 76 mm of rain followed by Pottuvil where 40.4 mm of showers were witnessed. Other areas to have recorded good rains include Maha Illuppallama 34 mm, Trincomalee 26 mm, Puttalam 22 mm, Kandy 21 mm, Anuradhapura 20 mm, Kurunegala 20 mm, Vavuniya 19 mm, Galle 15 mm, and Colombo 14 mm.

These rains have been attributed to the low pressure area which is currently persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka coast.

As per weathermen at Skymet Weather, rainfall activity is expected to increase over the nation of Sri Lanka during the next 24 hours. Moderate to heavy rains are expected to occur over the nation with isolated very heavy showers as well.

Rain intensity is expected to be higher over the southern parts of Sri Lanka as compared to other areas Not only this, flood like situation may occur over some areas due to hefty showers.
