6.5 magnitude earthquake hits Java Island, kills 2

Indonesia witnesses recurrent seismic and volcanic activity, as it is positioned on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide with each other.

On December 15, an earthquake ranging 6.5 in magnitude hit Java. As per the U.S. Geological Survey, it was about 91 kilometers deep and located just inland. The earthquake had hit Java at 11:47 pm local time. The tremors were felt across the island, and even in Jakarta which is 200 kilometers away from Java. The earthquake damaged many buildings in Jakarta as well. As per reports, the tremors were felt for about 30 seconds in places.

People ran out of buildings and roads were blocked with motorbikes, cars, and trucks as people absconded the coastal regions. Maximum damage has been reported in Tasikmalaya, Pangandaran and Ciamis regions of West Java Province, which are near the epicenter.

The devastating activity killed two people and damaged many houses near the epicenter. As per National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a 62-year-old man, and an 80-year-old woman were killed.

Around 40 houses were distorted and about 65 people were severely injured. Quite a few hospitals were also damaged by the tremors. It was so severe that the patients even had to evacuate the hospital building. The immediate consequence of the earthquake was the declaration of warning regarding tsunami, which was lifted two hours later.  On December 16 again few tremors of the earthquake were felt.
