Vegetable prices soar by 40% in Delhi, more rain to push up prices further

Vegetable price soars in Delhi

Vegetable prices are getting sky high ever since Delhi city started receiving moderate to heavy showers.

A possibility of prices seeing a 35-40% hike is also expected. In fact, these prices are also likely to remain on the higher end for another approx. 15-20 days.

Already, there has been a large disparity in prices of the wholesale and retail markets. Beans prices which fall in the range of 31 to 35 Rs/kg in the wholesale market are reaching close to Rs. 120 per kg in the retail market.

Similarly, cauliflower which is available at a wholesale rate of Rs 24 per kg is sold in the retail market at 120-160 per kg. Lady Finger which is getting sold at Rs. 28 per kg in the wholesale market is garnering a rate of Rs. 80 per/kg in retail market.

Deluged fields and the difficulty of bringing the veggies from the fields is the main reason for prices being high especially during the Monsoon season, claims Mahinder Sanpal, member of APMC Azadpur.

He further added that vegetables also start rotting because of being wet and this is possibly the reason why most of the consumers complain about getting poor quality veggies at higher prices.

Moreover, the vehicles that load the veggies out from the field to the market also take time in reaching Delhi because of waterlogged roads and traffic snarls. Additionally, local produce has been ravaged due to flooding of Yamuna banks which can also be attributed to price rise.

Price may witness a further increase as Skymet Weather predicts more rain for the hills and plains of North India in next 24-72 hours.
