In today’s world, ensuring adequate food supply to the ever-growing population has become a serious concern. Netherlands is a country whose total agricultural land area is more than hundred times smaller than the leading food growers like that of US and China. However, this country is among the top countries in terms of agricultural exports.
India as a nation needs to learn and adopt agricultural practices from Netherlands. Dutch people have been following ancient practices. They do not market Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) products. Dutch firms are the world leaders in the seed business. It has been known that Dutch agri scientists rely on molecular breeding. Molecular breeding is a general term used to describe modern breeding strategies where DNA markers are used as a substitute for phenotypic selection to accelerate the release of improved germplasm.
In simple terms, molecular breeding introduces no foreign genes to help develop high-yielding seeds. They use the methods which were used by the farmers 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, a region in Middle East where agriculture had flourished.
Dutch livestock and poultry producers have reduced the use of antibiotics by almost 60%. Since 2000, Dutch people have been following a motto of twice as much food using half as many resources. They have worked towards reducing the dependency on key resources needed for cultivation.
