All efforts by the Centre to increase the supply of Arhar dal and take control over the prices seem to have gone in vain. According to government data, the price of Arhar dal in the retail market on Thursday was Rs 200/kg.

Poor domestic production has led to rise in the prices of pulses for the last few months. It is assumed that the prices of pulses are likely to shoot even further. The domestic production of Pulses in the financial year 2014 and 2015 (July-June) had slid by almost 20 lakh tonnes to settle at 1.72 crore tonnes.

According to the data maintained by consumer affairs ministry, retail tur prices (Arhar dal) had touched Rs 200 on Monday. While last year during the same time tur was Rs 85 per kg. For the last five years the prices of tur were settling between Rs 74 per kg and Rs 85 per kg.

And though the prices of Urad dal have come down from Rs 187 per kg last week to Rs 170 per kg, the rates are still way above Rs 98 per kg prevailing last year during this time.

The government in order to increase domestic supply and check rising prices is taking several measure like import and curb on hoardings. But, the prices of the two pulses – Arhar and Urad – have failed to cool.

In an effort to prevent hoarding, the government had on Sunday imposed stock limits on pulses held by departmental stores like Big Bazaar and licensed food processors, importers and exports. There are stock limits already on traders.

Meanwhile, the Centre is also mulling to float fresh tenders for overseas purchase of additional tur dal.
