Rain gives hope to delta farmers in Trichi

October 22, 2012 6:58 PM |

New Delhi, The delta farmers of Trichi district in Tamil Nadu are relieved due to the sudden showers that occurred during the last few days. They feel that it is not suitable for the farmers to carry on with the samba cultivation but it would certainly benefit them in growing dry crops as the groundwater level will improve due to consistent rain. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) is also optimistic about hydropower generation to provide electricity to farmers waiting for irrigation water as reservoirs are being filled fast.

Delta districts have been receiving rain for the past few days and the onset of the northeast monsoon is proving to be a boon for the farmers who wanted to sow dry crops. The continuous rain would help in using borewell as the groundwater level would be up.

Farmers lament that if these rains had came in the last week of September it would have helped in the samba cultivation. They feel that even if they sow samba crops now it is not guaranteed that rain would continue for a long period and interruption in rain would again harm the crops. They are therefore putting more focus on the cultivation of dry crops.
