For many states in India, Monsoon of 2016 was a shy affair with rains. Kerala is one such state which remained rain deficient all throughout the Monsoon season. But other areas of south peninsula did receive stuffiest enough rainfall for the crops to flourish.
As per reports, fresh arrival of turmeric crop in small quantities has started hitting the Sangli wholesale market in Maharashtra. Around 400-450 bags for new crop has been reported to arrive at the market with each bag weighing 70kgs. This year the turmeric crop is in better condition in Maharashtra as it was when compared to last year.
States such as Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra which are key regions of turmeric production saw an increase in area of production by 8-10% than the last year. This growth in area of producing turmeric was due to the good monsoon last year. In 2015, turmeric production area was down due to low rains in the key producing states.
In Andhra Pradesh, final turmeric acreage for 2016-17 stands at 16,781 hectares. When compared to last year, the turmeric acreage in Andhra stood at 15,413 hectares. The average in-season area is around 19,059 hectares for Andhra Pradesh.
In Telangana, final turmeric acreage for 2016-17 stands at 45,638 hectares against last year’s acreage which stood at 42,535 hectares. The average in-season area is 48,083 hectares.
This year, production of Turmeric is expected to be better than last year due to good and timely monsoon rains. Weather being favorable at the key development stage of the crop has also resulted in good production. As per reports, Turmeric crop is doing well in key producing belts of Nizamabad. The arrival of fresh crops from Belgaum district of Karnataka will start from February onward.
