For the last few days, continuous heavy rain has been lashing many parts of Gangetic West Bengal leading to floods in several districts of the state. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Burdawan recorded 87.5 mm of rain. While Kolkata and Asansol received 35 mm and 39 mm of rain, respectively during the same period.
However, the depression which has given good amounts of rain has now weakened into a well-marked low pressure area and moved towards Jharkhand. The system will continue to move in a westward direction, weakening further into a low pressure area.
Due to the system moving away, the intensity and spread of rain will reduce significantly over Gangetic West Bengal in next 24 hours leading to improvement in the flood situation.
Though the skies will clear up with ample sunshine being observed, occasional light rain will continue in the region. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the month of July ended up giving very good amounts of rain in the region.
For instance, Gangetic West Bengal was observing a rainfall deficiency of 4% by the end of June. But successive weather systems in the region gave four good spells of rain between July 7 to July 9, July 13 to July 15, July 24 to July 26 and July 29 till date, which pushed up the rainfall figures. According to the data available with Skymet, July has ended with a rainfall surplus of 48%.
