Southwest Monsoon had made a thumping start in Mumbai during the month of June. The city had recorded 1117 mm of rain in June, breaking the all-time record of 1037.1 mm in 1971.
Cyclone Ashobaa was majorly responsible for causing widespread heavy to extremely heavy Monsoon rains in Mumbai.
But Monsoon showers have been disappointing since then. July and August reported lowest rainfall during last 10 years. September was no better and observed second lowest rainfall in last decade.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Southwest Monsoon 2015 has been dominated by strong El-Nino. As a result, no weather system developed in the Arabian Sea after June. This led to weak Monsoon surge resulting in less rainfall activity over the city.
Let us have a look at the rainfall figures recorded in Mumbai during last four months.
Please note: All figures in mm
As per statistics, Southwest Monsoon 2015 is almost a repeat of 2009, which was a severe drought year. Total rainfall recorded in 2009 was 1866 mm that is almost same to 1833 mm observed in 2015.
