Rain to hamper Navratri celebrations in Gujarat

October 2, 2016 12:09 PM |

Rain in Gujarat during Navratri
It's that time of the year, when people in Gujarat gear up to welcome Goddess Durga. The nine-day-long Navratri festival is celebrated with much fervor and gaiety, to honor the goddess and her nine forms. Scores of Hindu devotees fast, pray and dance to please the mother goddess during Navratri.

Gujarat celebrates the Garba and Dandiya festival during Navratri every year. With much fanfare, the state celebrates Navratri which commenced on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

A cyclonic circulation is lying over Vidarbha at present and a trough from this system is reaching up to North Gujarat. Therefore, during last 24 hours many districts of Gujarat received varying intensity of rainfall.

The Navratri celebrations were spoilt last night due to unseasonal rain. During last 24 hours, Ahmedabad received 33 mm of rainfall. Deesa also received light rains of 4.4 mm and Bhavnagar 3.6 mm of rainfall.

Rainfall is likely to continue in Gujarat till October 5, 2016. Therefore, the ongoing festival season in Gujarat could be further hampered. We expect scattered rains to continue over many parts of Gujarat.

Apart from the festive season, these rains will hamper the harvesting of groundnut crops in Gujarat. This is not the rainy season for Gujarat. During the month of October most parts of Gujarat receives only light rain, if at all.
