The winter festive season in India begins with the commencement of the Navratri festival.
Durga Puja is an annual Hindu festival which is celebrated from the sixth to tenth day of bright lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin. Other festivals follow these celebrations and the country slowly heads towards long wintry nights.
This year, Navratri festival has arrived later than last time. Now the advantage of celebrating Navratri around mid-October is that the threat of rain is minimal during this time of the year on account of withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon.
Currently, a cyclonic circulation resides over North Bay of Bengal. It is likely to give light rain in the southern parts of West Bengal, which also includes the state capital Kolkata.
Light rain has been observed over Kolkata in the month of October this year. More rain is expected over entire West Bengal from October 13 to 15.
Last year, the state celebrated a wet Durga Puja. But this year, Durga Puja is on October 21, and fairly good weather conditions are expected to prevail. The weather is likely to clear up by then and only little or no rain will be witnessed over West Bengal during this time.
