Out of the three hilly states, Uttarakhand is the most vulnerable to inclement weather conditions on account of heavy rains during the Monsoon season.
Particularly around the onset phase of Monsoon, Uttarakhand receives extremely heavy rains. However, this year we still haven’t seen any heavy rainfall spell. Though the Monsoon current has already reached the hills of North India, we haven’t seen any significant weather system making its mark felt over the region.
The onset phase of Monsoon is crucial for Uttarakhand on account of the terrain which poses a lot of challenges. As of now, weather conditions seem to be conducive for heavy rains. A Western Disturbance is approaching the northern hills. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is over west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coast. It may induce into a low-pressure area and further find its way up to Maharashtra.
The interaction between these two weather systems will bring heavy rains over Uttarakhand. On July 1 and 2, we should watch out for heavy rains and probably cloud bursts causing flash floods.
