Fog in Delhi is likely to play hide and seek for next few days. However, that does not mean that people will have to forgo the pleasure of basking in the afternoon sun.
Fog generally forms under stable conditions and clear skies. It’s a myth that a foggy morning cannot lead to a perfect sunny day. In fact, clear sky is a prerequisite for formation of fog. Clouds generally restrict the outgoing radiation and suppress fog in the lower levels. However, in the thick of winters fog may not dissipate at all, leading to cold day-like conditions.
Colder temperatures are favourable for formation of fog and therefore, fog will become a recurring phenomenon as temperatures take a dip in North India. Cold spots in surrounding areas can also lead to fog.
Fog in India
A fresh western disturbance will bring rain and snowfall in North India from Thursday night onwards. Minimums could rise temporarily due to clouds and rain but day temperatures will show a dip. After the spell of rain, fog will make a comeback in North India. Very dense fog can be expected that could bring some trouble for Delhiites as well.
As of now fog remains confined to Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. On Thursday morning, Amritsar, Lucknow and Gwalior witnessed zero to low visibility for an extended duration.
