Thunderstorm and torrential rain across Brazil has created flood like situation in several cities of the country. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, heavy rain has been experienced over the weekend and the activity is likely to continue during the next 48 hours as well.
A frontal system prevailing in Atlantic Ocean has been providing moisture incursion in the states of eastern Brazil. Some of the most affected cities are Minas Gerais, Goias, Tolantins and southern Bahia.
As per the latest forecast, capital city of Brasilla along with Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janerio are expected to receive heaviest rainfall of the region.
Most of these places have been experiencing drought conditions in the season so far. In January, Belo Horizonte had recorded a meagre 34.5 mm of rain against the monthly average of 250 mm. The current spell of rain is expected to cover up some difference.
According to experts, when the ground that is dry due to lack of rain, receives heavy downpour, it leads to excessive run off resulting in flood like situation.
This year, Brazil faced its worst drought since the 1930s. It is interesting to note that this is the rainy season for Brazil. The drought had led to severe water shortage and Sao Paulo which is home to around 20 million people was the worst affected by this drought.
In Rio de Janerio the reservoirs were operating at zero capacity. The drought had caused major damage to Soybean and coffee cultivation with coffee harvest being significantly lower than last year.
