The month of December was mild for the hills of North India. Only few rainy and snowy spells were observed over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
New Year began with a bang and weather conditions took a major turn with bouts of rain and snow lashing the hilly states. Gulmarg, particularly, has been shivering with extremely cold weather conditions with mercury plunging significantly. All thanks to its high altitude and back to back active Western Disturbances that were giving good spells of rain and snow over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
At present, night temperature in Gulmarg has been hovering close to -9°C. Meanwhile, minimum temperatures over Moscow are settling around -8°C. Winters in Moscow remain chilly with average low of -9°C or less which is not uncommon for the city. The average high too remains cold enough with -3°C.
Day temperatures over Jammu and Kashmir and nearby areas are also settling below normal, leading to severe cold day conditions.

According to Skymet Weather, series of active Western Disturbances are likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir during the remaining days of the month as well. This would continue to give snowfall over the higher reaches.
In fact, on and off rain can also be expected. Thus, no major change in the temperature profile expected at least for few days.
