Fresh spell of Monsoon rains likely to trigger floods in Bihar

August 16, 2015 6:30 PM |

Bihar floodsThe performance of Southwest Monsoon in Bihar has been extremely poor so far. The rainfall departure from normal in Bihar remained around 30% throughout the season.

However, we can now expect Monsoon activity to gain strength over the region as the Monsoon trough is moving closer to the foothills of the Himalayas and will be passing through northern parts of Bihar for the next 48 hours.

Northern districts of Bihar to be affected include West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria and Kishanganj. These areas will witness heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next couple of days.

The state has already started receiving some rainfall. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Motihari in East Champaran district of Bihar recorded 9 mm of rain in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday. Bhagalpur received 20 mm of rain, Muzaffarpur 10 mm and Patna observed 24.8 mm of rain.

This spell of rain will be highly beneficial for the Kharif crops in Bihar. But on the flip side, these rains could trigger flooding as heavy rainfall is likely all along the foothills of the Himalayas including Nepal. In fact, rain from Nepal could flow down to the rivers in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, increasing the risk of flooding. Rivers such as Ghaghra, Gandak, Kosi and Bagmati are likely to overflow and cause flooding.
