December 13, 2016 11:13 AM |

Chennai RainsCyclone Vardah battered Chennai on Monday, as the city recorded heavy to extremely heavy rains and thundershowers. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Minambakkam recorded 203 mm of rain, while Nungambakkam Observatory reported 119 mm.

With this, Chennai has recorded second highest rainfall in the last ten years. Vardah which had made landfall as a severe cyclonic storm has claimed 10 lives. Thousands of people were evacuated in wake of this storm.

Now Vardah has vacated the region and is presently seen over Interior Tamil Nadu, north of Dharmapuri. It will continue to move in west-southwest directions towards South Interior Karnataka.

However, remnants of the system will continue to give rains over Chennai during the next 24 hours but with reduced intensity.

We can expect light showers during the days with possibility of some moderate spells during the afternoon hours.

According to Skymet Weather, Vardah has left lots of moisture in the air and with day maximums now all set to rise, it may lead to development of convective clouds over Chennai. This may result in some moderate rain and thundershowers during the afternoon hours.

At present, Chennai is witnessing pleasant weather conditions with cloudy sky. Both maximum and minimum temperatures are settling well below normal.
