Cyclone Vardah: Chennai Airport receives 145 mm rain in three hours

Chennai rains which were nowhere to be seen during the past few days have been back with a bang. So much so that the city has received heavy to very heavy showers during the past few hours. Both the observatories of the city have been receiving very heavy showers since morning owing to Cyclone Vardah.

Now, the first arm of the cyclone has made landfall near Chennai and the city has already begun to receive very heavy rains. In fact, during the last six hours, Nungambakkam observatory has recorded a whopping 99 mm of rain.

As far as the Chennai airport is concerned, 145 mm of rain has been received between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm. In a span of six hours, at least 177 mm of rainfall has been recorded and more heavy rains are on the way.

So far, in December Chennai airport has received a whopping 361 mm of rainfall, more than half of which has been recorded today itself.

At present, all operations remain shut down at the Airport and no flights will fly to or from the Chennai airport. The airport will remain closed until 6:00 PM. Thereafter, operations will resume only after looking at the weather conditions then.

Cyclone Vardah

The Cyclonic storm Vardah is at present a severe cyclonic storm and the first arm of the storm has already made landfall near Chennai. The eye of the storm is expected to hit close to the coast of Chennai in the next hour or so.
