Bhubaneswar sizzles with record day temperature, rains likely

April 7, 2016 12:47 PM |

Weather in BhubaneswarBhubaneswar is the latest entrant in the ambit of heat wave pocket in the country. With 43.2°C, the capital was hottest city in the country on Wednesday.

Not only this, it is also the second highest day temperature in span of 10 years in April. The highest temperature is 43.6°C that was recorded on April 9, 2010. Bhubaneswar in Odisha was also the first city to reach 40-degree mark this season.

Heat wave is experienced when the maximum temperature over a place is above 40°C and five to six degrees above normal average temperatures.

The day temperature on April 6 was also five degrees above normal temperature of 37°C.

Bhubaneshwar had not witnessed any rains since March 21, which has led to sharp rise in the mercury. In view of this, day maximum have been settling around 38°C. According to Skymet Weather, Bhubaneswar is located little far from the coast and thus, the weather over the city is governed by the winds blowing from the land mass.

Presently, hot and dry northwesterly winds have been blowing over the region that has led to an increase in the temperature.

However, relief is in offing during the next 24 to 48 hours itself. The city is likely to witness rain and thundershowers on account of the confluence zone forming over East India.

Humid southwesterly winds from the anti-cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal will merge with the northwesterly from north. Interaction of these winds will bring rain over the region.

But this relief will be short-lived as mercury will start rising again. According to Skymet Weather, summers are of indications that hotter days lay ahead. Hence, there are good chances of mercury breaking the record of last decade.
