Cyclonic storm Komen has brought flood-like situation in Kolkata. The city has been receiving exceptionally heavy showers for the last couple of days. In fact, Komen has led to flooding in several districts of West Bengal including Hoogly, Midnapore, Burdwan, Asansol, Bankura and 24 Parganas.
After making landfall in Bangladesh on Friday, Komen brought heavy showers in Kolkata. In a span on 24 hours from 8.30 am on Friday, Kolkata recorded 133.6 mm of rain.
Komen has now weakened into a depression and is presently situated 100 km north/northeast of Kolkata. It still holds enough strength to bring widespread heavy showers in entire West Bengal including Kolkata. Click here to read more on Storm Komen.
Monsoon 2015 in Kolkata
Southwest Monsoon began on a weak note and its onset was a little late in Kolkata. The first 10 days of June was almost dry and the month fell short of normal rains in the city. However, July received good showers both in space and time. It has rained throughout the month in the ‘mishti city’, except on July 12.
Just like August, July also began on a rainy note in Kolkata. The city crossed its monthly average of 400 mm of rainfall in just 10 days of July. The month ended with Kolkata recording 665 mm of rainfall. On July 10 the city received heaviest rainfall for the month and recorded 157 mm.
Monsoon forecast for Kolkata
August began with Kolkata receiving three digit rainfall on the very first day. More showers are likely for next 72 hours. Kolkata will receive heavy showers during next 24 hours and the intensity of rain will gradually reduce, thereafter.
