This year, during the Northeast Monsoon season, four back to back low pressure areas formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. The first system intensified into Cyclonic storm Kyant, which did not affect Chennai much in terms of rain.
The second system reached the stage of a depression. The third one intensified into Cyclone Nada which had resulted in good rains over Chennai and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu. Some heavy rainy spells were observed in Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The fourth weather system intensified into Cyclone Vardah and wreaked havoc over Chennai reminding people of last year’s deluge. While rains were not continuous for many days as last year, the city did record very heavy to extremely heavy rains.
In fact, in a span of three hours, Chennai received a whopping 145 mm of rainfall. During the last few days, rains have remained far and few over the city.
However, a fresh weather system had formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is presently over south-central Bay of Bengal in the form of a low pressure area. The system is currently moving in a westerly direction towards the Tamil Nadu coast during the evening hours of December 19.
Many areas of coastal Tamil Nadu including Chennai are expected to receive good rains on December 20. Rains are expected to begin during the night time on December 19. However, these rains will not be heavy to very heavy in nature.
