Kerala is all set to witness a prolonged spell of rain and thundershowers commencing from May 16.
According to Skymet Weather, the low pressure area prevailing in Southwest Bay of Bengal will be responsible for pounding fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers from May 16 –May 19. Few heavy showers are also likely during this period.
The system is expected to intensify into a depression during the next 24 hours. The depression has a potential of turning into a cyclonic storm as well.
The coastal state has already started witnessing rains of moderate intensity. In span of 24 hours, Kochi has received 28.8 mm, Punalur has received 23 mm and Thiruvananthapuram has received 6 mm of rain. On 15 May, light rain occurred over parts of Kerala with Kozhikode recording 13 mm, Kannur 1 mm and Thiruvananthapuram 0.4 mm.
As the system gets more marked, it will shift northwestwards closer to Tamil Nadu coast. With this, intensity of rains will increase significantly May 17 onwards over Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
According to weathermen at Skymet Weather, these systems govern the winds pattern of vast areas of around 100 kilometers from their present location.
Pre-Monsoon showers have remained absent this year. This had also led to heatwave conditions over several parts of the state after almost after two decades.
