The storms that have given heavy rainfall brought flash flooding across many parts of Europe during the weekend. It has forced immediate evacuations in several cities with killing at least three people, two in Italy and one in Greece.
According to weather experts, heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Greece during the weekend, due to the eastward movement of the same low-pressure system that brought flooding over parts of Italy.
Several hundred people had to evacuate due to the floods in northwest Italy. In addition, many roads, schools and businesses were closed across northwestern Piedmont and Liguria.
The heavy downpours caused by the storm created run-offs that swept across the hilly terrains and into the River Po and its tributaries.
The storm incited around 470 emergency calls on the island of Zakynthos after more than seven inches of rain inundated the area. Most of the calls were of flooded basements.
The heavy downpours and flooding not only led to the closure of a major road in Athens, but caused power shortages and severe damage to several structures.
By Sunday, recovery efforts and assessment of the damage were underway.
As per experts, there has been a huge amount of material damage, around 610 people were left homeless. The waters have flooded the ground floors of homes, businesses and farm buildings.
