Be resilient to Loo with refreshing drinks

April 17, 2014 4:42 PM |

Weather in North India has been pleasant till now due to simultaneous Western Disturbances bringing short and frequent spells of rain in the region including Delhi/NCR.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, northwest plains are witnessing two simultaneous cyclonic circulations. Accordingly, maximums will remain comfortable around 33°C till Saturday, while the minimum temperature in Delhi will remain in the early twenties. Strong and moist southwesterly winds from the Arabian Sea will enhance the weather in Delhi.

But as we approach the end of April, Delhiites should be prepared for hot weather accompanied by strong and dry summer afternoon winds, locally known as Loo in North India. This wind is especially strong in the months of May and June due to high temperatures.

Delhi witnesses these strong and dry winds by the end of May and till the arrival of monsoon, when temperatures shoot up to high-thirties and going beyond fourties at times. Few hours of exposure to it could be detrimental to health and can even lead to fatal heat strokes.

Effects of Loo on ecology

These winds originating in the Great Indian Desert and the desert areas of Southern Balochistan cause very low humidity and high temperatures. Thereby, Loo leads to damaging and drying effect on vegetation and fairly widespread browning in the affected areas.

In the deforested areas Loo blows without any hindrance proving fatal for many birds and animals. Several insect-borne diseases including malaria cases come down as mosquito and insect population plummet this season, serving as a blessing in disguise.

Effects of Loo on human health

It is advisable to avoiding exposure to the Loo, especially for children, elderly people and pets.  Sherbets of rose, bel ka panna (juice of stone apple), kairi ka panna (juice of raw mango) and Rooh Afza are popular refreshing drinks, which are believed to be have a cooling effect on the body and provide some protection against Loo-caused heat strokes. Some age-old practices and Grandma’s tips could work wonders this summer in India.
