Tropical cyclone Mahasen in south-central Bay of Bengal may re-curve in the next 24 hours and head towards Bangladesh in a north-northeast direction thereafter. It might make a landing in Chittgong in Bangladesh after the next 72 hours. The cyclone may continue to keep coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh very hot and humid in the coming two days. Similar weather could prevail in Kolkata in India when the weather system approaches Bangladesh coast. The effect of Cyclone Mahasen will also be seen over northeastern states that might receive heavy to very heavy rain after the next three days.
Cyclone Mahasen is currently placed at its western most limit from where it will head north in the next 12 hours. It will re-curve and would head towards Chittgong in Bangladesh some 1330 km away from it in a northeast direction. The speed of Mahasen is around 80 kmph that could slow down when it re-curves but will intensify and gain speed once it places itself in the northeast path. At the time the cyclone hits land it could have a speed of around 100 to 110 kmph.
Along with Bangladesh, Myanmar will remain on high alert as rain flooding could be witnessed up to 40km inland. The possibility of the storm weakening could also be considered if the weather system looses most of its energy in the sea itself.
For the next 24 to 48 hours, the weather in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh could witness uncomfortable conditions under rain bearing clouds and the heat that’ll remain trapped to increase both temperature and relative humidity. Coastal areas will have moderate winds yet fishermen are advised not to venture into deep seas during the next two to three days.
Kolkata, the 'city of Joy' will not be far away from the weather system. The Green house like effect will bring uneasy and unbearable hot and humid weather. Moderate rain could also be expected in Kolkata after the next 48 hours. There will be some rain from this storm in coastal areas of Orissa and West Bengal.
The region in India expected to face the affects of the cyclone will be northeast. Rain will continue at many places in northeastern states during the next two to three days. Heavy to very heavy rain could occur at one or two places in the region during the period.
