Northeast monsoon in south India is expected to gain momentum from Thursday onwards due to two back to back weather systems. The first one is close to the east coast and is about to develop into a depression. Owing to this, northeast monsoon rain will be witnessed in south India from November 14 to 17. And a new weather system (low pressure area) that is likely to form in the Gulf of Thailand, may enter the Andaman Seas around November 18.
After it arrive on October 22, northeast monsoon has not performed as expected. Tamil Nadu, the state which gets most of the rain from the northeast monsoon is deficient by 32 per cent in the week from October 31 to November 6. Tamil Nadu has received 35.6 mm of rain against the average of 52.7 mm that is used to receive during this period.
Rain in Kerala is deficient by 34 percent in the same week. Kerala recorded 38.2 mm of rain against the average of 58 mm in this period. Rayalaseema received 7.7 mm of rain against the average of 23.3 mm which is short by 67 percent. South interior Karnataka recorded 6.1 mm of rain against the normal of 17.3 thus is deficient by 65 per cent.
Winter rain in Jammu & Kashmir above average
Winter rain/snow in Jammu and Kashmir due to Western Disturbances, has been in excess as the state has received 10.3 mm of rain in the week between October 31 to November 6. But rainfall remains deficient in Himachal Pradesh and Haryana while it was scanty in Uttarakhand. Only Punjab in the region has recorded normal rain for this period. Punjab received 1.5 mm of rain against the average of 1.7 mm for the week.
