After Philippines, Typhoon Haiyan heads for Vietnam

November 10, 2013 4:53 PM |

Typhoon Haiyan is expected to make another landfall in Vietnam by Sunday evening or Monday morning. It was found to be weakening a bit on Sunday morning after making multiple landfalls in Philippines' islands but was blowing at wind speeds of around 160 kmph which is similar to that of a Category 2 Hurricane.

Haiyan forecast

The typhoon will move northwest and slowly weaken before moving towards the north before the probable landfall in northern Vietnam. Damaging winds, coastal flooding and heavy rain will continue to be witnessed in northern Vietnam and southern China in the next 24 hours.

Vietnam remains on high alert as authorities have begun mass evacuations in four central coastal provinces. According to state run news site VNExpress, more than 200000 people have been taken into shelters. The army has been mobilised to provide emergency relief with some 170,000 soldiers assisting people after the typhoon hits.

Central Vietnam has recently been hit by two other typhoons - Wutip and Nari, both weaker category one storms - which flooded roads, damaged and tore the roofs off hundreds of thousands of houses.

Haiyan devastated Philippines on Friday

Death toll in Philippines is expected to reach 10000 as the typhoon barreled through six central Philippine islands on Friday, wiping away buildings and leveling seaside homes. Most of the deaths and destruction has been reported from Tacloban on Leyte Island. Haiyan is being considered as one of the strongest storms to hit Philippines.
