After Haiyan struck Philippines, tropical Depression Zoraida has made landfall over Philippines on Tuesday morning. As of 9 am today, Zoraida was over Caraga and Davao Oriental in the Western Pacific Ocean. The weather system has wind speeds of around 55 kmph and is likely to follow a path similar to that of Haiyan.
Rescue and relief operations in areas devastated by Haiyan could take a beating as Zoraida might bring heavy rain that could lead to flooding in low-lying areas while causing landslides in the hills.
According to Philippines Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the estimated rainfall amount could be from 5 – 15 mm per hour within the 300 kilometer diameter of the Tropical Depression.
PAGASA said that the storm will affect Bohol, southern Cebu, Negros provinces, and northern Palawan provinces. Sea travel is risky over the Northern seaboard of Northern Luzon and the Eastern seaboards of Northern and central Luzon.
More than 10000 people have been estimated to be killed by Haiyan, the strongest tropical storm of 2013.
According to Xinhua (Chinese state-run news agency) at least nine people had died and seven were missing in Hainan and Guangxi provinces. China Meteorological Administration has issued a rainstorm warning as it expects more rain in southern China during the next 24 hours. Haiyan is expected to weaken during the period.
'Voice of Vietnam', a radio station in Vietnam, said that at least 13 people were killed and 81 injured in Vietnam. Winds blowing at speed of 100 kmph uprooted trees and left thousands without power after the storm slammed into Vietnam yesterday.
